This is insane

Master engraver Graham Short has come up with a unique way of personalising football boots, albeit we can’t see it taking off. The miniature engraving expert has etched the names of every England player to find the net at a World Cup from 1950-2010 into the bottom of a metal stud.

If you’re thinking that would be pretty hard to do, wait until you hear the regime Graham puts himself through to be able to produce the tiny works of art.

He told Humans Invent: “The tiniest vibration or movement can cause me to make errors. I need to be as still as I can. I do a lot of swimming. I swim about ten thousand meters a day. I get into work about ten o’clock in the evening and work until about 5am as it’s quieter then, and there isn’t any traffic that may cause vibrations.

“I get my resting pulse rate down to about 30 beats a minute. I wear a stethoscope which is tied to my chest so I can hear my heart going. I also have a course of Botox around my eyes every few months: this helps the muscles and the nerves to be absolutely rigid. My engraving arm is strapped to a big metal press.

“I also take beta-blockers to lower my heart rate. I work through a 400 magnification medical microscope.”

Check out more of Graham’s work, including engraving ‘Nothing Is Impossible’ on the edge of a razor blade!
