A Romelu Lukaku-powered Everton held on for a 3-2 win in a game in which it once looked like they would coast to victory.
Lukaku’s two goals and an assist – aided by some woeful Newcastle defending – saw Roberto Martinez’s side race into a 3-0 first-half lead.
The Magpies improved after the break, with a stunning Yohan Cabaye goal and a scrappy, late Loic Remy effort restoring some respectability.
But the power, pace and skills shown by Lukaku – and a beautifully weighted assist for Ross Barkley to score – must have Chelsea wondering what any of their strikeforce are doing that the young Belgian doesn’t seem to be doing better right now.
