Rooney’s penalty against the Swiss was his 50th England goal which saw him overtake Bobby Charlton’s long standing record.

He addressed his teammates and coaching staff after the game for a speech to mark the occasion having scored his first goal for the Three Lions 12 years ago.

Kane’s debut on the international stage earlier this year has come later than Rooney’s did but at only just 22 years old he has time on his side to at least get near the top of the list. He will probably have far less time to break the record, though.

“Genuinely thrilled for @WayneRooney . A terrific player with a record that will last for a long, long time. Or will it @hkane28 ?” Lineker wrote on Twitter.
