Types of MLS betting odds
Understanding MLS odds is key to making informed bets.
Here’s a breakdown of the main markets you’ll see on betting apps, along with how they work and when to use them.
Moneyline odds
Moneyline bets are the most straightforward. You’re picking the outcome of the match: home win, away win, or draw.
Favorites are shown with negative odds (e.g. -140). You need to bet $140 to win $100.
Underdogs are listed with positive odds (e.g. +220). A $100 bet pays $220 if they win.
This market works well when you’ve identified a team with a strong edge or you see value in an underdog upset. It’s also commonly used in parlays.
Spread odds (goal line betting)
MLS spreads, also called goal lines, apply a handicap to create more balanced betting odds.
A -1.5 favorite must win by at least two goals to cover the spread.
A +1.5 underdog can win outright or lose by one goal for your bet to cash.
This market is useful when you expect a lopsided result or when you want a cushion in tight matchups. It’s also a good option when backing strong home teams or fading poor away form.
Some sportsbooks also offer alternative spreads, such as -0.5, -2.5, or +2, to give you more flexibility.
Over/under odds (totals)
Totals betting focuses on how many combined goals are scored in the match. It doesn’t matter who wins.
A line of 2.5 goals means you’re betting whether the final score will go over or under that number.
Over is a smart option when both teams are attack-heavy or defensively weak.
Under is better when the match features cautious tactics, strong goalkeeping, or low expected goals (xG).
Some books offer team totals (for example, “LA Galaxy Over 1.5 goals”) or alternative totals (such as Over 3.5 or Under 1.5) to match your risk level.
Both teams to score (BTTS)
This bet asks a simple question: will both teams score at least once?
If both score, Yes wins.
If either team gets shut out, No wins.
BTTS bets work best in matchups with strong attacks and questionable defenses. They also fit well into same-game parlays.
Live MLS betting odds
Live betting lets you place wagers during the match as the action unfolds. Odds change in real time based on events like goals, red cards, or tactical shifts.
Popular in-play markets include:
Next team to score
Live moneyline or spread
Updated total goals
Second half BTTS
Live betting gives you the flexibility to react and capitalize on changing momentum.
MLS props and player bets
Prop bets focus on specific match events. These are more specialized bets but offer unique angles.
Common MLS prop markets include:
First player to score
Player over/under shots or cards
Anytime goal scorer
Team to score first
Props can offer better value if you follow player form or team tactics closely.
MLS betting lines and Vegas odds
“Betting lines” refer to the odds tied to each market, such as moneyline, totals, or spreads.
“Vegas odds” usually means the opening odds set by major sportsbooks that influence the wider market.
