Liverpool are reported to have joined Manchester United in the race for Brazilian midfielder Everton Ribeiro.

While the thought of Everton chants ringing out from the Kop might not immediately appeal to Liverpool fans, it would be a significant coup if they can beat their old rivals to the signing of the Cruzeiro star.

We reported last week that United were hoping to sign the 24-year-old, who was named Brazil’s player of the year on Friday. Now, the Daily Mail reports that Brendan Rodgers has also set his sights on the highly-rated playmaker.

The player namechecked United in a recent interview, but the Reds will hope their early season form will convince Ribeiro to move to Anfield.

He told Sportv: “I will continue doing my job here at Cruzeiro but plan on getting to a big club, it’s a dream I’ve had since I was young, I’ve always liked Manchester United,’ Ribeiro told Sportv in a recent interview.

“I haven’t talked with my agent yet. I asked him to talk only with Cruzeiro and let me focus here as I still have one more game to play and I want to end this league well.”

Ribeiro’s form the season had led to him being tipped for an international call-up ahead of next summer’s home World Cup for Brazil.
