Is Tom Heaton a new Scott Carson in the making?

England under-21s tasted defeat for the first time in 16 matches last night, albeit against an Ecuador side that was about as under-21 as your granny. They lost 3-2 despite holding a 0-2 lead at one stage. While England had 21-year-old Cardiff City keeper Tom Heaton in nets, the South Americans had 37-year-old Jose Cevallos behind their mish-mashed side of under-23s and Premier League players.

Unfortunately it was Heaton, on-loan from Manchester United, who stole the show. The keeper seemed to forget at regular intervals that he was guarding a near post as well as a far post as his positioning was at fault for two of Ecuador’s goals, as you can see in the video above. Perhaps Cardiff should bring in John Virgo as a new angles coach.
