Now, here at OTP we want to remove diving/simulation/cheating from our game as much as anyone. Anything that tarnishes the reputation of the beautiful game must be eradicated, and villains treated with the heavy-handed arm of the football law.

However, it does appear that referees can often go too far. In a Belgian amateur game between Templeuve and Quevy, the referee sent off Julien Lecomte despite clear evidence that the player was, in fact, seriously injured. The referee could probably have gleaned this information from the fact that he was being carried off on a stretcher.

After a challenge in the box late on in the game, there was a clash of heads, but the referee clearly thought that Lecomte was play acting. Reports after the match concluded than the player has suffered three displaced vertebrae.

I think that’s known as rubbing salt into the wound.
