We know how the tabloids work. Write something (the more outrageous the better), and then if it is proved to be brilliant right or awfully wrong then perfect, because either generate hits, and hits are gold.
But we still don’t feel too bad for noting the Daily Mirror’s ridiculous piece on Ronaldo by Derek McGovern, because it was proved to be utter tripe.
McGovern calls Ronaldo a flat-track bully and a Portuguese Ladyboy, saying that he chickens out of the big games, before questioning the star’s intelligence.
It is a betting column, so McGovern gives his sage advice: “Don’t be tempted by ludicrous odds of 4/6 for Ronaldo to score and instead lump on 11/10 that he doesn’t”.
Fast forward 24 hours, and obviously Derek McGovern looks pretty stupid. And yet, with the notoriety gained by the column, hits to the website will be up. Sometimes I hate how the media works.
