Real Madrid have rejected a €40m from Manchester United for midfielder Sami Khedira.

Reports in the Spanish media suggest United made a last-gasp offer for the Germany international, but that has been turned down by Real.

Khedira had been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu, with Chelsea reportedly interested earlier this summer.

But with no deal forthcoming, the player’s agent said earlier today that there was no chance of his client make a deadline day move.

That hasn’t stopped United attempting to snap him up. It is not clear whether Real are holding out for more money or simply want to keep hold of the rest of their squad since Mesut Ozil is set to join Arsenal.

Meanwhile, United are also battling bureaucracy to complete a move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague said United’s representatives had visited the headquarters of the Spanish league to present a check for €36m in accordance with the rules relating to buy-out clauses.

However, they left without having managed to pay for Herrera, which means the deal is still hanging in the balance.

The two clubs could get an extension on the transfer deadline until midnight if they seek permission from the Premier League before 11pm.

The 24-year-old is believed to have already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract which he will sign if the red tape issues can be overcome.
