Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is hoping for three points against Tottenham on Wednesday in order to guarantee Premier League football next season.

The Magpies are currently on 37 points and Pardew thinks a win at home to fifth-placed Spurs will ensure his side are not dragged into a relegation scrap.

Once his side hit the magic 40-point mark, Pardew has Manchester United in his sights.

He said: “You’re never safe from relegation in my opinion until you have 40 points in the bag. So we’re not safe…

“There’s always an incentive in football, always. Your professional pride is the minimum.

“In front of us, you know, the result at Manchester United yesterday was a result that cheered me up because it gives us a chance to try and catch them, and I think if we can try and finish above Manchester United, that would be hell of an achievement for this club, regardless of anything else.

“So that’s the immediate incentive for us and then see where we takes us.”
