1. Spain can point to their defeat in their opening game against Switzerland on the way to victory in the 2010 World Cup, but this looked distinctly like the end of an era.

2. Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti will conclude that Iker Casillas has provided some solid evidence as to why they both think Diego Lopez is better. The Real Madrid keeper did not cover himself in glory.

3. Life’s looking good if you’re a Manchester United fan. Their new manager oversaw this win, while striker Robin Van Persie has rediscovered his golden touch.

4. Diego Costa is probably reflecting that he might have been better sticking with Brazil and winning penalties whenever defenders brushed his shoulders, rather than switching to Spain and being on the receiving end of that. The Chelsea-bound striker was also very lucky not to be sent-off for a headbutt.

5. Blind-Robben was a good combination for Holland to create the third goal for Holland. Croatia will reflect that it was a similarly good combination between Brazil and the ref last night.
