1. Netherlands go through with a 100 per cent record. Less free-flowing football and flying headers than we’re used to but three wins from three games speaks for itself.

2. England’s extra layers in training weren’t enough. For real success in Brazil, you need to put on Fer.

3. Norwich City fans may reflect that a few more thumping headers like that from Leroy Fer might have helped their fight against relegation last season.

4. Memphis Depay not only sounds like a tasty American dessert, he is also very useful off the bench. He looks set to establish himself as a top player during the course of this tournament.

5. This was an interesting, tactical, cagey affair, but there was very much a sense of ‘we’re both through, let’s not break our necks for a goal’. In the end, substitute Fer simply craned, his rather than break it, and that set Louis Van Gaal’s side en route to victory.
