1. Arjen Robben found the time to do a spot of Persieing on the way to winning the penalty that proved to be the decider.

2. Rafa Marquez’s age – and the heat – finally caught up with him. It was a silly challenge to give that penalty away.

3. This was a great advert for not having the World Cup in Qatar. There was an exciting conclusion to the game, but you know that both sides could have offered more in cooler conditions. It was a case of ‘Let’s go fry Dirk Kuyt’, even with the inaugural cooling breaks.

4. This was a great comeback from Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands side in Fergie time. Manchester United fans will approve. And assistant manager Ryan Giggs will certainly approve of Netherlands continuing in the tournament.

5. Guillermo Ochoa ensured he will go home to receive lots of calls from managers and agents. The Mexico keeper, who is a free agent, produced another great performance and one particularly outstanding save.
