Standing in their way in the Capital One Cup is McClaren’s high-flying Derby side, who have knocked Carlisle United, Charlton Athletic, Reading and Fulham out of the competition to book their spot in the final-eight. The Rams won their last three league games at home, scoring 11 times in the process and conceding just twice.

But they come into this game off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough last Saturday. That loss knocked the Rams off the top of the table in the Championship and McClaren feels that Chelsea are the perfect opponents to take on in their bid to restore confidence in their camp.

Derby County team news

  • Ryan Shotton is suspended following his red card in the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough last Saturday.
  • George Thorne is McClaren’s only injury worry.

Chelsea team news

  • Cesc Fabregas will be available again after serving his suspension.
  • First-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is still struggling with a muscular injury he picked up in the 2-0 victory over Hull City last Saturday so he is a doubt for this game.

Derby County vs Chelsea Prediction

In the absence of Shotton, McClaren is expected to pair Jake Buxton with Richard Keogh at centre-back. The Rams will probably set up in their usual 4-3-3 formation with Chris Martins flanked by Simon Dawkins and Johnny Russell as the front-three when they attack.

Courtois is unlikely to be risked for this game so Cech, who has played in both of the Blues’ two previous League Cup games so far this season, is expected to continue in goal.

Mourinho may also include the likes of Andre Schurrle and Mohamed Salah in his starting XI to keep his squad fresh for the hectic festive season. Fabregas could also start in midfield in what should be Chelsea’s usual 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Blues should try to dictate the game with their possession-based football and the Rams will probably also try to play because they are also enjoying a good season, so this should be an open game with the Blues as favourites because of their superior quality.
