Newcastle are reportedly keen to sign defender Chancel Mbemba – but only if they can find out how old he is.

The Anderlecht man is expected to be the subject of a £6m bid from the Magpies in the January transfer window.

Congo international Mbemba has variously been reported as being aged 20, 24 or 26 – and Newcastle are keen to solve the conundrum before signing him, claims The Sun on Sunday.

Anderlecht believe he is aged 20, but records from his former youth club claim he is 26.

The Congo FA has used at least two different dates of birth when registering him for competitions.

FIFA tried to shed some light on the matter with an investigation in which Mbemba is said to have claimed that he thought he was born in 1990, which would make him 24.

Birth records from the impoverished area in which Mbemba grew up have not been located.
