Southampton are weighing up a move for Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier as they prepare for life without Nathaniel Clyne, according to the Mail on Sunday.
England international Clyne enters the 12 months of his contract this summer, is yet to agree a new deal with the Saints and is reported to be a transfer target for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
The report suggest that Ronald Koeman’s side will look towards Trippier, aged 24, if Clyne is moved on during the summer transfer window.
Marauding right-back Trippier has been an impressive performer for the relegated Clarets this season and appears unlikely to follow Sean Dyche’s side down to the Championship.
The Mail on Sunday reckons it is almost certain that Southampton or one of their Premier League rivals will opt to activate a £3.5m release clause in Trippier’s Turf Moor contract and keep the former Manchester City youngster in the top flight next term.
North East rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland could reportedly also move for Trippier.
