Tottenham Hotspur have made the first move in the race to land Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report suggests that Spurs are hoping to see off competition from Liverpool and Southampton to land the 24-year-old.

With the Reds having already landed striker Danny Ings from the relegated Clarets and signed James Milner from Manchester City, so Brendan Rodgers’ side are not hanging around this summer. That appears to have sparked Mauricio Pochettino and the White Hart Lane hierarchy into action.

The Argentine boss is said to be keen to add competition and cover for England right-back Kyle Walker, who has struggled with injuries.

Spurs are said to have made contact with Burnley with a view to activating a £3.5m release clause in former Manchester City trainee Trippier’s contract at Turf Moor.

The former England Under-21 international looks set to stay in the Premier League next season despite his side’s relegation back to the Championship.
