He spent the second-half of last season on loan at League One side Swindon Town, scoring two goals in 14 appearances for the Robins.

The youngster has been featuring regularly for the under-21 side again this season, but will now head for first-team experience in the Championship.

He becomes the first signing of new Brentford boss Lee Carsley, who replaced Marinus Dijkhuizen earlier this week. Carsley had previously been in charge of the Bees’ development squad and indicated that Swift had impressed him when the two development sides played each other in August.

The former Republic of Ireland international told Brentford’s website: “John played against us for Chelsea’s Development Squad level in August and was very good. He has lots of energy and can play in various positions. He likes to shoot, which is something that we want in the team.

“John is a really exciting player and it is great that Chelsea feel this is the right environment for him to develop.”
