That history doesn’t need to go back to far. Rising inflation and the rising price of footballers means that all of the transfers featured have happened in the 21st century, with most of the top 10 coming in the past three years.
The oldest deal currently in the top 10 is Zinedine Zidane’s move from Juventus to Real Madrid in 2001.
Gareth Bale remains the most expensive player in the world following his €100m move from Spurs to Real Madrid in 2013. Indeed four of the top 10 involve players moving to the Bernabeu.
Also featured are Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling’s recent moves to Manchester City, which perhaps went under the radar slightly in terms of just how pricey they were.
