Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has agreed a loan move to Preston North End.

He has been signed by manager Simon Grayson on an emergency loan deal for an initial 28 days.

The 22-year-old makes the switch to Deepdale after Sunderland decided to recall Jordan Pickford, Preston’s first-choice keeper so far this season, from his loan spell at the club.

Johnstone previously joined the Championship side 12 months ago. He kept 12 clean sheets in 25 games between January 2015 and the end of last season, helping the club to win promotion from League One in the process.

He will be able to resume his PNE career in tomorrow’s home game against Rotherham United. The final game of his initial 28-day spell will be the clash with Derby County at the end of January.

Local lad Johnstone was born in Preston and his dad Glenn played a handful of games for North End in the 1990s.
