Manchester United players have reportedly been laughing behind manager Louis van Gaal’s back over a new formation he foisted upon them in recent weeks.
Ahead of the 1-2 win at Watford in November, Van Gaal used one of his team meeting to introduce the squad to their new 4-2-2-2 formation. Unfortunately, that proved to be a bit of a cock-up because the players were soon laughing about the system’s similarity to a penis when displayed on a tactics board, according to the Red News fanzine.
The report claims the players were joking about it the next day, with Van Gaal oblivious to the gag.
A club insider partially corroborated the story to The Sun, but claimed the formation had actually been deliberately set out on the tactics board to look a bit rude by a member of Van Gaal’s coaching team as a bit of “banter”.
The same source insisted the Dutchman was not the butt of any joke.
He said: “The formation resembling an appendage did appear but it was nothing to do with Louis.
“A member of the backroom staff drew it as a joke.
“It was a bit of banter and in no way any kind of dig at Louis.”
