Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says plans to sign Nigerian starlets Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze are progressing well.

The Gunners boss said his club would try to complete deals to sign the pair from the Diamond Football Academy during the current transfer window, which closes on Monday evening. But he pointed out that both players would have to secure work permits and pass medicals before the transfer can be finalised.

Both players have been linked with the Gunners since starring in the Under-17 World Cup last year, with 17-year-old attacking midfielder Nwakali earning the player of the tournament award and considered the better prospect.

Wenger told his press conference yesterday: “Talks are progressing well. There are work permit issues. There are medical issues, because they have to make medicals. It’s progressing well.

“We identified Nwakali as the player of the tournament, basically, and as a top player.

“We will see if we can manage to get it over the line during this transfer period. [If we can], we will do it. Chukwueze is [signing] as well.”
