Argentina international Ezequiel Lavezzi claims he turned down moves to Manchester United and Chelsea in favour of a switch to the Chinese Super League.

Lavezzi, aged 30, signed for Hebei China Fortune from French champions Paris Saint-Germain last month.

The former Napoli forward reckons he opted for that deal over a transfer to Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.

Lavezzi, who now earns a reported £11.65m per season, says being involved with the project to develop his new club and experience Chinese culture were key factors in his decision.

But he admits that his move has probably ended his international career with Argentina.

According to the Daily Mail, he told French broadcaster Canal+: “I could have signed for Inter, Chelsea or Manchester United.

“But I made the decision to go to China. It’s an important choice for my career, I’m sure I’ll face many challenges here.

“I like the project to develop this club. It was that which convinced me to come to Hebei, as well as the financial aspect.

“I’m also fascinated by Chinese culture, so to come and play here is definitely an interesting challenge.”

Lavezzi had joined PSG from Napoli in July 2012 in a deal worth a reported €26.5m. He was earning around £5.85m per season at Parc des Princes.

He left with a record of 35 goals in 163 appearances in all competitions for Laurent Blanc’s side.
