Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is coming out of retirement at the age of 45.

The ex-Netherlands international hung up his gloves in 2011 after six seasons at United. He made his name at Ajax and played for Juventus and Fulham, but he came through the youth ranks at Dutch minnows VV Noordwijk.

Van der Sar has offered to help out the amateur side, who face a crucial game against Jodan Boys without goalkeeping cover. An injury to Noordwijk’s first-choice keeper Mustafa Amerzine has left them in a tricky situation and their famous son has answered the SOS.

Noordwijk director Peter Vink told Voetbal in de Bollenstreek: “We are thrilled that Edwin wants to help.

“After deliberation he agreed to keep goal next Saturday against Jodan Boys.”

He added: “We assume that it is basically only for one game.”

Van der Sar spent five of his formative years at VV Noordwijk before moving on to Ajax at the age of 20 to start a decorated professional career.

His last game before retirement was the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona on June 28, 2011.
