The Dutch FA wants Louis van Gaal to become its technical director this summer, according to The Independent.

Van Gaal still has a season to run on his contract with Manchester United and has previously stated his plan to retire to his holiday home in Portugal when he leaves Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, he has been regularly touted for the sack this season, with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho strongly linked with his job.

Van Gaal’s previous employers before he took the United job in July 2014 were the Dutch FA. He was in charge of the Netherlands national team between 2012 and 2014, guiding them to a third-place finish in the 2014 World Cup.

The KNVB now wants him back, but in a technical role rather than as coach. They reportedly want the 64-year-old to oversee the Zeist Campus, Dutch football’s new and improved centre of excellence, which is due to be completed and ready for use this summer.
