Oscar De La Hoya is adamant Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia will eclipse his pay-per-view record set with Floyd Mayeather, but how many buys will they need to take top spot?

The lightweight rivals clash in Las Vegas on Saturday night, with the Golden Boy promoter convinced the pair can generate more than 2.4 million PPV buys between them.

De La Hoya and Mayweather fought in 2007 and made millions of dollars as a result. However, this record was beaten by ‘Money’ himself on two separate occasions.

Research from Sportingpost.com has shown Mayweather’s 2017 showdown with MMA superstar Conor McGregor generated 4.3 million buys and his 2015 pound-for-pound clash with Manny Pacquaio still stands as the most-bought boxing event in PPV history at 4.6 million buys.

Britain’s Anthony Joshua may no longer be the titan he once was in the heavyweight division, but he has eclipsed the 1.5 million pay-per-view mark on three occasions already in his career.

Should Davis vs Garcia break two million PPV buys, it will deservedly be hailed as a massive commercial success. Yet ‘Money’ Mayweather remains boxing’s kingpin.
